Established in 1940, the Air Station in Elizabeth City has been the site of training and missions during World War II and many other objectives and missions in the years following. The base saw a major expansion in 1966, basically “swallowing” two addition facilities of the United States Coast Guard. This expansion allowed the United States Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City to provide the region with better support. The base has also been a site for filming, such as “The Guardian” starring Kevin Costner, which was released in 2006. A military ID is required to visit the base.
