If you're anything like me, you're always chasing that perfect mix of charm, history, and kindness—and I found it in Elizabeth City. I love how this riverside town wraps you in warmth the moment you arrive. When I needed a break, this was the peaceful coastal escape I didn’t know I needed. You’ll soak in maritime history, local art, and that signature Southern hospitality without even trying.

Best Time to Visit

I’ve learned that April through October is the sweet spot. You’ll catch mild days, perfect for wandering the waterfront or joining a local festival. I felt those riverside breezes on a spring morning boat ride—it was something you just have to experience. If you visit then, I think you'll agree.

How to Get There

  • By Car: I usually drive in from Norfolk—it only takes about an hour. If you’re coming from Virginia Beach, plan on 1.5 hours or so. Super easy.
  • By Air: When I flew, I landed at Norfolk International (ORF). You’ll find rental cars right there, and the drive to Elizabeth City is smooth and scenic.
  • By Boat: If you’ve got a boat, I can’t recommend docking at Mariners' Wharf enough. They offer free slips, and I felt incredibly welcomed—it lives up to its “Harbor of Hospitality” name.

Where to Stay

  • Foreman House Bed & Breakfast – I stayed here once and didn’t want to leave. You’ll love the restored charm and the little touches that make it feel personal.
  • Hampton Inn Elizabeth City – When I needed something modern and easy, this was my go-to. You’ll appreciate the free breakfast and the short drive to downtown.
  • Comfort Inn Elizabeth City – I’ve stayed here on quick trips. If you want something right off the highway with all the essentials, this one works well.
