Mount Katahdin is known for being many things – first and foremost, this mountain peak is the highest spot in Maine (5270 ft) and secondly, it forms the northern end of the world-famous Appalachian Trail which begins in Georgia. The foresight of Gov. P. Baxter, who donated the land to the people of Maine, has ensured that this remarkable wilderness area will always be preserved for the citizens of Maine to enjoy. Hikers and climbers come from all corners to take on the challenge of hiking and climbing this formidable mountain. Less experienced hikers should consider the Hunt/Appalachian Trail route which is considered the easiest way to reach the summit. Fall is without doubt the most scenic time to visit.
