Lying at the foot of the Katahdin Mountains in north-central Maine, Baxter State Park is a 200,000-acre wilderness area named for Governor Percival P. Baxter, who donated much of the land on which it stands. True to Gov. Baxter’s vision, Baxter State Park is maintained as a truly wild area, rich in wildlife but devoid of most modern amenities like electricity and running water. The hiking is brilliant and there are over 200 miles of trails to explore as well as several roads where you can enjoy mountain biking. Other activities include camping at one of 337 campsites, fishing, paddling, rock climbing, hunting, wildlife watching and several organized activities like the Junior Ranger Program and other Interpretive programs.
