The agricultural landscape and the expansive everglades create ideal conditions for thermal to develop. The phenomenon is known as the Sea Breeze Front. Since the 1930s aviators from around the world have been attracted to the area. In 1930, the Miami Soaring Club, a chapter of the National Glider Association was established. The first international mail drop by glider happened in 1935, from Miami to Key West to Havana. A gliderport was built in the 1960s.
