Tecolote Canyon Natural Park and Nature Center is a lovely natural park in San Diego that is located on a site that originally served as a hunting ground for the region's indigenous Kumeyaay people. The park is named in honor of the Mexican word for owl, a reference to the park's native bird populations. Its lands were originally settled by white pioneers in 1872 and were used for farming through the end of World War II. In 1978, the park lands were acquired by the City of San Diego and dedicated to the public. Today, visitors can enjoy more than 6.5 miles of hiking, jogging, and mountain biking trails, along with a nature center offering programming and exhibits related to the region's indigenous plant and animal species. Visitors can also rent space at the nature center for private special events, including meetings and workshops.
