Review:
Founded in 1873, the Sri Mahamariamman Temple is Kuala Lumpur’s oldest Hindu temple. It is situated on the edge of Chinatown in Jalan Bandar. A new structure was erected in 1968 that features the ornate ‘Raja Gopuram’ tower, styled after South Indian temples. Founded by K. Thamboosamy Pillai, the temple was originally used by the Pillai family as their private shrine. In the 1920s, they opened the temple up to the public, eventually becoming an important location for the early Indian immigrants to come and worship. Today locals and visitors flock to the temple in droves to learn more about Malaysia’s national and cultural heritage.
