Located near the village of Skipness on the east side of the Kintyre Peninsula, Skipness Castle was begun in the early 13th century. Additions were made to the building throughout the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries, but it was eventually abandoned in the 17th century after being sieged by the troops of Alasdair Mac Colla. Today, visitors can access the castle itself as well as a chapel located down by the shore and dedicated to St. Columba. There is no admission fee or charge for parking, and the castle and chapel are open to the public year-round.
