Formerly known as Barrogill Castle, the Castle of Mey was purchased by Queen Elizabeth in 1952. The Queen used the castle as a summer home until her death in 2002, at which point the buildings and grounds were opened to the public. Much work has been put into restoring the gardens to their original glory, and a 12-foot wall protects the gardens and parts of the parkland from the ocean and the weather. The castle is only open in the summer, and visitors are advised to check the website for the most up-to-date information on the hours.
