Known to be one of the earliest artillery forts in Scotland, Ravenscraig Castle dates back to the early 1460s when it was built for Queen Mary of Gueldres. Defining features of the building include the 3.5-meter-thick outer walls, the two round towers linked by a cross range, and the rock-cut ditch that surrounds the castle as an extra layer of defense. There is no charge to visit the castle, but visitors should note that only an exterior view is available. A rough path leads down to the shore where visitors can take in excellent views of the castle from below.
