Review:
The medieval Turaida Castle, which translates to “Thor’s garden,” can be found near the Gauja River. The Livonian Brothers of the Swords, a military order established by Bishop Albert of Riga, built the castle in 1214. Though the castle was abandoned in 1776, the Turaida Museum Reserve allows visitors to explore the artistic, architectural, and archaeological history of the land’s past. Other than the Turaida Stone Castle, visitors can also explore the Folk Song Garden, Folk Song Hill, Turaida Church, and the Rose of Turaida Memorial. There are many Latvian festivals held at the site annually, with one of the most popular being the summer solstice, which is held at the end of June.
