Officially known as Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, The Tower of London is a historic castle on the banks of the Thames River. Built by William the Conqueror in 1078 during the Norman Conquest of England, the castle was used as a royal residence in its early history but was later used as a prison in the 16th and 17th centuries where many historical figures fell into disgrace, including Elizabeth I before she became queen. The Tower is located between two concentric rings of defensive walls and surrounded by a moat. Today, the Tower of London is one of the UK’s most popular tourist attractions and protected as a World Heritage Site.
