No visit to Copenhagen would be complete without seeing the famous Little Mermaid sculpture at Langelinie Pier, which is probably the city’s most iconic tourist attraction. For over 100 years, the granite and bronze mermaid has been forlornly sitting on her rock in the water, trying to catch a glimpse of her fairytale prince. The sculpture was inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale about a lovely mermaid who falls in love with a real-life prince and gives up her underwater life to be re-united with him on land. The sculpture was commissioned and donated to the city of Copenhagen in 1913 by Danish Brewer Carl Jacobsen after he watched a ballet based on the famous story. See her at Copenhagen Harbor.
