Visitors interested in history and architecture have a treat in store when they visit the superb Roskilde Cathedral, Denmark, which was the first Gothic cathedral built in Denmark around 1170 on the island of Zealand, just 30 minutes by train from Copenhagen. The cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is surrounded by several medieval buildings and some good examples of 17th and 18th-century homes. Curiously, the original 1170 brick structure was Romanesque in style but during the 100-year building period many other influences prevailed – side chapels, porches, and other structures were added to mirror current architectural styles, resulting in an architectural masterpiece that is home to the tombs of 39 kings and queens of Denmark.
