The De Bosset Bridge dates back to 1810, while Cephalonia was under British rule. The bridge was originally built out of wood and spanned the Bay of Argostoli, greatly reducing the distances local residents had to travel to reach the north of the island. It almost immediately became obvious that the wooden bridge could not carry much weight and it was gradually replaced by stone. Today it holds the distinction of being the longest stone-built bridge to cross an ocean. The bridge was quite badly damaged during the earthquake of 1953 and was repaired and re-enforced. Today the De Bosset Bridge is mainly used for local events and as a pedestrian bridge.
