When you need a brief break from the sun and the sea, a visit to the Castle of Agios Georgios is a perfect activity on the beautiful island of Cephalonia. The castle is really old – it was built back in the 12th century by the Byzantine Emperors and has served many purposes over the centuries. It was initially built to protect the island from invaders but it was also used a residence for noblemen and as a self-contained city during the Venetian period, when it was self-sufficient and could withstand a lengthy siege. While much of the original structure has fallen into ruin, there are still many interesting parts to explore including churches, ancient homes and a monastery, all tucked beneath the walls.
