Towering nearly 100 meter above St. Marks Square, The Campanile is the bell tower of the Basilica di San Marco.

It dates back to the 12th century and was once used as a lighthouse for shipping. However, the structure you will visit today is a reconstruction of the original tower which collapsed in 1902, narrowly avoiding severe damage to the basilica. In contrast to the basilica and the Doge’s Palace, the campanile is quite simple and austere.

You can reach the viewing platform at the top of the tower by elevator for a small fee. Here you will find brilliant 360 degree views over the whole of Venice and her islands and get to see the single remaining original brass bell (4 others were destroyed when the tower collapsed).
