The Basilica of St. Mark (Basilica di San Marco) is the most famous and opulent church in Venice.
Built in the 11th century, on the site of two former churches, the Basilica was the final resting place of St. Mark as well as the Doge’s chapel; as such it was lavishly decorated to reflect the wealth and power of Venice at that time. Here visitors can stand in awe as they admire a masterful marriage of Eastern and Western elements of architecture – it is widely thought that Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia was the inspiration for the design of this Italian/Byzantine masterpiece.
The highlight of any visit to the basilica is the chance to admire over 8000 square meters of stunning mosaics. Today the basilica is the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Venice and religious services continue daily.
