When we look back in history to the 9th and 10th centuries, we find the emergence of several “Venetian Schools”, which performed much like a modern guild, offering political, economical and religious guidance to their members.

The Dalmatian School was one of these organizations which assisted people from Croatia, just across the sea from Venice, to integrate into Venetian society. Besides learning a little history, your purpose for visiting the historic School is to admire the unique artwork inside the building. The interior walls are covered in a monumental narrative painting created by Vitore Carpaccio between 1502 and 1509. The painting depicts the lives of St. George (of dragon fame), Tryphon and Jerome.
