The town of Clear Lake in the northern part of Iowa is a place that’s particularly known for offering fun for the entire family.
The museum exhibits showcase the lives of farm folks in 1700, 1850, and 1900.
If you’ve ever driven through Iowa like I have, you’ve seen the endless cornfields and those beautiful rolling plains. You’ll find the mix of modern cities, cultural gems, and historic spots makes it more interesting than most people expect.
When I visited Des Moines, I was surprised by how modern it felt while still honoring its history. You’ve got to check out the gold-domed Iowa State Capitol—it’s stunning and really stands out against the skyline.
If you love art like I do, you’ll want to spend time at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art. I couldn’t stop admiring the Grant Wood collection—especially knowing he was from Iowa. You’ll recognize American Gothic instantly!
You should stop by the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History if you’re into fossils or prehistoric tools. I spent more time there than I planned—it’s fascinating and really well done.
I always recommend Dubuque to anyone who loves river towns. You’ll love its historic feel and the way the Mississippi shapes the whole experience. I found the old buildings and museums especially charming.
I had a great time in Ames—it’s a college town with tons of energy, thanks to Iowa State University. You’ll enjoy the lively vibe, especially if there’s a game or campus event.
You’ve got to plan ahead if you want to visit Pella during the Tulip Festival. I went once, and I felt like I’d been transported to the Netherlands—you’ll love the Dutch bakeries, parades, and flowers everywhere.
