When I wanted a friendly Midwest escape with a mix of small-town charm and a little speed, I made my way to Newton—and I think you’ll enjoy it too. Just 30 minutes east of Des Moines, Newton surprised me with its peaceful parks, cool local museums, and the roar of race cars at Iowa Speedway. Whether you're catching a summer race or wandering through downtown shops, it’s the kind of town that makes you feel welcome right away.
When I Think You Should Go
I’ve found that May through October is the perfect time to visit. You’ll get warm weather, blooming gardens, and events like summer concerts or races that give the town a fun buzz. Fall is also gorgeous with colorful foliage lining the parks. If you don’t mind a little snow, winter is quiet and cozy—ideal for a slower-paced getaway.
How I Got There (And How You Can Too)
- By car: I drove in via I-80—it’s an easy 35-minute ride from Des Moines and only about two hours from Iowa City. Super straightforward, and plenty of roadside stops if you need a break.
- By air: I flew into Des Moines International Airport (DSM) and picked up a rental car. The drive to Newton took around 40 minutes and was smooth the whole way.
- By bus: Some friends of mine used regional transit options that connect from Des Moines. While there’s no direct Greyhound to Newton, you can make it work with a transfer or two if you plan ahead.
Where I’ve Stayed (And Think You’ll Like Too):
- AmericInn by Wyndham Newton: I stayed here when I went to the Iowa Speedway—it’s super close, has a comfy vibe, and the free breakfast made mornings easy.
- Best Western Holiday Manor: I liked the central location and updated rooms. Plus, it’s pet-friendly, so if you're traveling with a furry friend, you’re covered.
- Quality Inn Newton: When I was looking for something budget-friendly, this place was just right. Clean, convenient, and near shops and restaurants—it worked great as a base.
