Looking for college-town spirit, prairie beauty, and Midwestern charm? I’d tell you to head to Ames, Iowa! After years of travel writing, I’ve come to appreciate towns that blend energy with ease—and Ames does that beautifully. You’ll find vibrant arts, scenic trails, and Big 12 sports all in one spot. I’ve caught a game at Iowa State, wandered through lush gardens, and sampled more than a few local eats. You’ll feel right at home here, whether it’s your first visit or your fifth.

Best Time to Visit

I always plan my Ames trips for spring or fall—usually April to June or September to October. You’ll love the mild weather and blooming landscapes. I’ve enjoyed campus events and lively town energy in those seasons. Summer’s quieter, which I don’t mind when I want fewer crowds. And if you visit in winter, like I have, just bundle up—it’s snowy but peaceful.

How to Get There

  • By Car: I usually drive up I-35—it’s a smooth ride about 40 minutes north of Des Moines, or 3.5 hours from Minneapolis if you’re heading from the north.
  • By Air: I’ve flown into Des Moines International Airport more than once. You’ll find the 40-mile drive to Ames easy, especially if you arrange a shuttle or rental ahead.
  • By Bus: I’ve seen plenty of travelers use Jefferson Lines. If you don’t want to drive, you can count on good regional connections to get you here comfortably.

Where to Stay

  • Gateway Hotel & Conference Center – I’ve stayed here when I wanted a full-service experience. You’ll enjoy the pool, restaurant, and proximity to campus events.
  • Iowa House – This boutique inn is one I always recommend. I love the cozy rooms and breakfast, and you’ll appreciate the unique history of its former fraternity house.
  • Sleep Inn & Suites – When I need easy access to the highway and campus, this clean, modern hotel does the trick. You’ll rest easy here.
