Looking for scenic trails, railroad history, and small-town charm? I found all that—and then some—when I spent time in Boone. Tucked into central Iowa, this little town surprised me with its vintage train rides, welcoming community, and the kind of peaceful outdoor beauty that just slows you down. Whether you're hiking to river bluffs or riding through a canyon on a classic train, I think you’ll love the mix of adventure and relaxation here.
Best Time to Visit
If you're anything like me, you’ll want to plan your visit for late spring through fall—from May to October. I’ve gone in the summer when the trails are green and festivals fill the calendar, and in the fall when the leaves turn those rich gold and red shades—it’s stunning. Winter can be cozy too, especially if you’re in the mood for snow-covered landscapes and a quiet, small-town feel.
How to Get There
- If you are traveling by car: I usually drive in via U.S. Highway 30—it’s about 15 minutes west of Ames and less than an hour north of Des Moines. You’ll find it’s an easy and scenic drive, especially once you get off the interstate.
- By Air: When I fly, I land at Des Moines International Airport (DSM). From there, it’s roughly an hour’s drive—super convenient if you’re coming from out of state.
- By Train: There’s no passenger service anymore, but I still recommend experiencing the town’s rail history. The scenic train rides are a big reason I first visited—and I’d definitely ride again.
Where to Stay
- American Inn & Suites – I stayed here for a quick weekend and found it super convenient. It’s clean, easy to get to, and close to everything you’ll want to explore in town.
- Baymont by Wyndham Boone – If you’re like me and enjoy a comfy place to unwind after a long hike, this hotel is a great pick. Plus, the indoor pool and free breakfast don’t hurt!
- Ledges State Park Cabins or Camping – I’ve camped here before, and waking up to those wooded ridges was such a treat. Whether you bring a tent or book one of the rustic cabins, you’ll be surrounded by some of Iowa’s best scenery.
