The Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest was built in 1925 as a way to help protect the surrounding local rivers, such as the Flambeau and Wisconsin. This large forest covers 225,000 acres and features a nature center that has a handful of natural history exhibits inside. Park-goers can also head out into the forest to go hiking or cycling thanks to the many loop pathways winding around the grounds. The Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest is also home to the Willow Flowage Scenic Waters Area which is surrounded by bogs and swamps.
