Review:
Easily accessible from central Berlin in less than 15min by train, Spandau Citadel is home to the very impressive renaissance fortress called Spandau Citadel. The citadel was built in the 16th century (on the site of a previous 13th century fort) and for many years it served to protect Berlin from any onslaught. You are welcome to explore at your own pace but joining a guided tour is so much more rewarding as you will learn all about the history, myths and legends that abound. Today the citadel serves two very different functions – in winter it provides refuge to thousands of bats in the vaulted bat cellar (Bat Tours available) and at other times of the year it hosts major festivals and events.
