Friedrich Wilderness Park is a spacious 600-acre nature park in San Antonio, originally established in 1978 after land donations by area residents Norma Friedrich Ward, Wilbur Matthews, and Glen Martin.
The Balcones Escarpment park, which was established in cooperation with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, offers a wide variety of visitor amenities, including more than 10 miles of hiking trails ranging in difficulty from easy to moderately strenuous.
Visitors can observe a variety of rare bird species, including the federally endangered black-capped vireo and golden-cheeked warbler. As the park is a designated natural area, visitors should note that no rollerblades or bicycles are allowed on trails and that pets are not permitted within the park.
