At the heart of this beautiful area lie the largest sand dunes in North America, offering visitors a spectacular backdrop to a range of fun activities. The dunes are surrounded by a very diverse landscape composed of forests, wetlands, tundra, grasslands and alpine lakes, all of which offer an exceptional range of habitats waiting to be explored.

The vast majority of visitors come to explore the expansive forests and dunes on foot – a dunes accessible wheelchair is available on loan at the Visitor’s Center. Other fun activities include sand boarding and sledding on the dunes, splashing in the Medano Creek (the creek can sometimes be dry), horseback riding, biking, star gazing and attending the free Ranger Programs.
