The Capulin Volcano National Monument forms part of a large volcanic field which has over 100 extinct volcanoes and volcanic vents. Capulin Volcano was formed more than 60,000 years ago and while it is currently dormant, it is possible that it may become active again at some time.
In the meantime, the National Monument provides a huge outdoor recreation area where visitors come to enjoy majestic rim views over 4 states and some of the best dark skies in the country. Activities in the area include mountain biking, hiking, scenic drives (up to the rim of the volcano), camping and star-gazing.
