Located in the central business district of downtown Spokane, the Spokane Falls are waterfalls and dams that add to the beauty of the city and are one of the top Spokane attractions. At one time there was a large Native American population living here, and they called the falls Stluputqu or “swift water.”
The falls are divided into two parts: the Upper Falls is the site of the Upper Falls Dam built in 1920 while the Lower Falls features the Monroe Street Dam, which was built in 1890 and generates hydroelectricity for the city. The Friends of the Falls is an organization that protects and preserves the falls and the nearby river gorge.
