Review & FAQ:

Glaciers were largely responsible for shaping the Rocky Mountains landscape which forms part of the Continental Divide. Large tracts of land were purchased by the state in 1803 and hunters and trappers operated on the periphery. The 1859 gold rush brought miners to the area. They were followed by homesteaders and ranchers who were drawn by the mountain water. The Rocky Mountain National Park Act of 1915 set the boundaries, incorporating some private lands. During the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps built campgrounds, roads, trails and bridges. There are 415 square miles of which 250000 acres have been declared wilderness areas. More than 4.5 million people visit the park annually.
