Hassel Island was actually a peninsula, but it was separated from the mainland in the 1860s to create better water circulation. The National Park Service now maintains the 135 acres of land and aims to interpret and preserve the island's rich history.

There are several historic sites on the island for visitors to explore such as the Creque Marine Railway, the Leprosarium, and Shipley's Battery, a defensive fortification built in the 1800s by the British. One of the more unique attractions is the Garrison House, a building used as a Board of Ordnance Stores and to house weapons, ammunition, and military equipment.
