Often at the center of conflict between animal rights activists and beach access advocates, Children’s Pool Beach presents an opportunity to see sea lions and harbor seals up close. Originally, the beach was intended for children to safely play in the ocean when a local philanthropist built the protective seawall in the 1930s. Now, visitors can go out on the seawall to watch the marine mammals lounge on the beach. During the months of June to November, the beach is open for playing on the beach and swimming. The beach is closed December through May for pupping season. Grassy Scripps Park overlooks the beach and is a good place for a picnic.
