Although Scripps Oceanography pledged in the early 1900s to always maintain a public aquarium presenting scientific findings to the public, it wasn’t until 1992 that the newest iteration was created. The goal at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps these days is to promote conservation of our oceans, provide marine science education, and explain Scripps oceanography research. Hall of Fishes has over 60 habitats, and Elasmo Beach Exhibit features a 13,000-gallon leopard shark tank. There are two exhibits dedicated to natural resources, three interactive displays including coral and seahorses, and a tide pool display. There are also several temporary exhibits throughout the year.
