Ostrog Monastery was carved into the side of a vertical cliff high above the surrounding countryside of Ostroska Greda in Montenegro. The monastery is the final resting place of Saint Basil of Ostrog, who is believed to have had miraculous powers to cure afflictions, and the monastery has become one of the world’s most-visited places of pilgrimage for a mix of religious beliefs. The spectacular site of the monastery offers sweeping views to those who take the trouble to navigate the steep and winding road which takes you to the base of the complex. The fact that the entire complex was excavated out of a natural cave during the Ottoman Empire (1300-1453) is the greatest draw for visitors.
