There’s no denying that Onofrio’s Great Fountain is an iconic landmark of Dubrovnik. Built by Onofrio della Cavain in 1438 and completed in 1440, this fountain was integral to the community as it was the ending point of the city’s aqueduct system and a key water reservoir in Dubrovnik. Onofrio’s Great Fountain features sixteen sixes, each with a striking and unique stone-carved masked face adorning its façade. From the masked faces’ mouths spouts a faucet, which projects the water. Not to be missed is its smaller but equally beautifully constructed brother, the Small Onofrio, which is located just under the Belfry by the City Guard.
