The Slovak National Gallery was founded by law by the Slovak National Council in 1948. For Europe, this was a relatively late date and is the result of Slovak ambitions after the war. The gallery was created historically as a traditional fine arts museum of works by local artists, as well as those of wider European origin. From the start, a vital focus of the Slovak National Gallery has been collecting twentieth century works of art and mapping the culture of contemporary art. The Sculpture in Slovakia permanent exhibit is an outdoor exposition featuring works by prominent twentieth century Slovak artists.
