Best Romantic Weekend Getaways in South Carolina

Sunset over the water in South Carolina

South Carolina always surprises me with how effortlessly it blends Southern charm, coastal beauty, and a sense of timeless romance. From Charleston’s cobblestone streets and pastel-colored homes to the windswept beaches of the Lowcountry, it felt like stepping into a slower, sweeter world. We spent a month exploring its hidden corners and soaking in that laid-back vibe. Here are my favorite weekend spots for rest, relaxation and building new memories. I think you’ll enjoy them too.

Relax by the water and savor coastal views on a summer trip.
Marina Inn at Grande Dunes

1. Coastal calm at Marina Inn at Grande Dunes - 2 hours 10 min from Charleston

Tucked along the Intracoastal Waterway, this resort feels private and peaceful, yet it’s only minutes from the ocean. Hubby and I loved waking up to water views and sipping coffee on the balcony. Honestly, it was the best way to start the day.

I think one of the best things about Marina Inn is how much there is to do without even leaving. We spent an afternoon lounging by their beautiful outdoor pool, complete with cabanas and stunning views of the waterway. In the evening, we had dinner at Waterscapes, their on-site restaurant, which felt like a hidden foodie spot with creative coastal dishes.

For anyone who loves the beach, they even offer a private beach shuttle, which made it super easy to enjoy the sand without the crowds. We both thought our son would love it here, so we’ll definitely bring him along next time, though our time won’t be quite as romantic.

Between the golf courses, marina access, and family-friendly activities, I truly believe this South Carolina weekend getaway has something for everyone.

Courtyard Mornings at The Elliott House Inn

2. Courtyard Mornings at The Elliott House Inn

Charleston was definitely full of history, but it was The Elliott House Inn that gave our weekend shape. Nestled in the heart of the historic district, it felt like stepping into a quiet chapter of the city’s past. Shuttered windows, iron balconies, and a tucked-away courtyard where time seemed to slow.

Tucked into a charming 19th-century carriage house, the inn is the kind of place that feels both historic and intimate, a rare romantic combination that made our stay special.

I loved the way the inn blended classic Southern character with cozy, modern comfort. My room had exposed brick walls, warm wood floors, and vintage-style furnishings that gave it such an authentic Charleston vibe.

My favorite feature, though, was the private courtyard balcony, perfect for sipping a glass of wine with my hubby in the evening.

One of the best perks is the complimentary continental breakfast delivered straight to your room or enjoyed in the charming outdoor courtyard. I loved starting my morning there, surrounded by greenery and the sound of the city waking up around me. It felt like my own secret hideaway in the heart of downtown.

The location is also unbeatable. You can walk to King Street if you are in the mood to do some shopping, explore the historic district, or head to the waterfront in just minutes. For me, it made exploring Charleston effortless.

Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina

3. Harbor lights at Charleston Harbor Resort

Tucked on Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, this resort feels like a hidden gem with sweeping views of Charleston Harbor and the city skyline.

I love that there’s a private beach, multiple pools, and even a full-service marina, the largest in South Carolina. You can set sail or go on a fishing charter right from the resort!

What I think makes this place stand out is the variety of experiences it offers. There are two distinct hotel options: The Beach Club, which has wrap-around porches, coastal-inspired interiors, and a breezy Lowcountry vibe. And Harborside, which blends Southern charm with classic nautical décor and many rooms that come with balconies overlooking the harbor. We chose Harborside for our romantic weekend stay, but I think I'd go for The Beach Club if we had our son with us.

One of the best things about Charleston Harbor Resort is that you don’t even need to leave the property to have a full vacation.

You can lounge poolside, sip cocktails at the tiki bar, or indulge in a spa treatment at The Estuary Spa.

In the evenings, live music and harbor sunsets at The Reel Bar quickly became my favorite ritual. And when I wanted to explore downtown Charleston, the water taxi made it effortless (and extra romantic!).

Stylish & Sweet at Hotel Trundle

4. Hotel Trundle

We drove a little over an hour from Charlotte, the road flattening into the South Carolina midlands before Columbia came into view.

Hotel Trundle wasn’t just a place to stay. It was a love letter to Columbia. From the moment I walked into the art-filled lobby, I knew it would be on my list of favorite weekend getaways in the South. The vibe was bold, creative, and romantic in that perfectly unexpected way.

What I love most is that it’s independently owned and proudly showcases its South Carolina roots, from locally made furnishings to artwork by regional artists. Staying here feels like supporting the community while also enjoying one of the best boutique experiences in the South.

The design is colorful, eclectic, and full of personality. Our room was cozy yet stylish, with bold pops of color, whimsical wallpaper, and plush bedding that made it feel both fun and comfortable.

My favorite feature was the thoughtful little touches, like locally sourced snacks and craft beer waiting in the mini-fridge, which made me feel instantly at home.

The location couldn’t be better either. Right in downtown Columbia, the hotel is within walking distance of Main Street’s restaurants, coffee shops, and cultural spots like the Columbia Museum of Art. It made exploring the city so easy and enjoyable. Hubby and I enjoyed the peaceful Finlay Park, the impressive South Carolina State House, and the elegant Hampton-Preston Mansion & Gardens.

For us, Hotel Trundle is the definition of an underrated gem. It’s creative, community-driven, and full of character, making it my favorite place to stay in Columbia whenever I want a mix of comfort, style, and true Southern hospitality.

5. The Cottages on Charleston Harbor - 5 min from Charleston

We usually fly in and out of Charleston, so I wanted to mention another one of our favorites for a romantic stay: The Cottages on Charleston Harbor.

Tucked beside the water, each cottage has a front-row view of the harbor, porch swings, sea breezes, and slow sunsets that seem to hold you still. Even a single night here can spark your romantic spirit anew.

Located in Mount Pleasant, only about 5 minutes from the city, this spot gives you the best of both worlds: the charm and history of Charleston paired with the peace and quiet of a private waterfront escape.

I loved how our cottage felt like my own personal retreat. With spacious living areas, fully equipped kitchens, and wide screened porches overlooking the harbor, it was the perfect setup for both relaxation and gathering with friends or family.

On-site, you can head to the community pool. There's also private beach access so you don't have to leave if you just want an easy romantic weekend with a view! But when I wanted to explore, it was so easy to hop over the bridge into downtown Charleston for amazing dining, shopping, and sightseeing. For me, that convenience was unbeatable.

The Cottages on Charleston Harbor really are a gem, perfect for families, couples, or anyone wanting privacy without losing access to the city. It’s easily one of my favorite ways to experience Charleston, and I’d go back in a heartbeat.

The Beaufort Inn

6. Lowcountry elegance at The Beaufort Inn

We drove about an hour and a half south from Charleston, the road narrowing as it passed through marshes and tidal creeks before opening into the historic streets of Beaufort.

The Beaufort Inn captured everything I love about the Lowcountry. It has moss-draped oaks, colorful verandas, and Southern gentility that never felt forced. We stayed in a garden cottage with rocking chairs on the porch and hydrangeas blooming at our feet.

Inside, my room was spacious and full of personality, with high ceilings, antique-style furnishings, and a plush bed that made it hard to leave in the mornings. The bathrooms felt spa-like, with clawfoot tubs in some rooms and luxurious amenities that gave it a truly pampering touch.

One of the best parts of The Beaufort Inn is its location. Just steps away are the waterfront park, art galleries, boutiques, and some of Beaufort’s best restaurants. I could easily stroll to everything, which made exploring this charming Southern town effortless and fun.

7. Andrew Pinckney Inn: Historic Elegance in Charleston

Another great option if you are like me and visit Charleston a lot is Andrew Pinckney Inn.

Nestled right in the historic district, this inn combines charm, elegance, and a welcoming atmosphere that makes every stay feel special. It's one of my favorite boutique hotels in the city, and I think it’s an underrated gem.

What I love most about the Andrew Pinckney Inn is its character. The property consists of beautifully restored historic buildings with classic Charleston architecture, think pastel stucco, ironwork balconies, and plenty of Southern charm.

My room felt cozy yet refined, with exposed brick, plush bedding, and thoughtful touches that gave it a unique personality. My favorite feature, though, was the rooftop terrace. Starting our morning there with complimentary breakfast and sweeping views of the Charleston skyline was very romantic.

The location is another highlight. I loved being able to walk just a few blocks to Charleston’s top restaurants, the City Market, and the waterfront.

The staff also made my stay memorable. From warm greetings at check-in to helpful local recommendations, they made me feel at home. Those small touches really set this inn apart from bigger hotels.

The Cuthbert House Inn

8. Porch-side romance at The Cuthbert House Inn

As a part of a longer road trip through the South, we drove about an hour and a half south from Charleston, the road winding through marshes and quiet tidal rivers before opening into the historic streets of Beaufort.

Staying at The Cuthbert House Inn was like staying in a love letter to the past. Built in 1790, the house overlooks the bay and carries every creak and whisper of its long history. If you’re into historic romance novels and movies like me, this place will totally steal your heart!

The Cuthbert House Inn in Beaufort, South Carolina, is one of my favorite historic stays in the Lowcountry, and I truly think it’s one of the area’s best hidden gems.

This elegant antebellum mansion overlooks the Beaufort River and has all the charm you’d expect from a Southern coastal escape.

From the moment I arrived, I felt like I had stepped back in time. The inn is filled with classic details like soaring ceilings, grand fireplaces, and sweeping verandas with rocking chairs that invite you to sit and soak in the views.

My favorite spot was the porch at sunset, when the sky turned golden over the water, it was absolutely magical and my hubby agreed.

Inside, my room was spacious and full of character, blending antique furnishings with modern comforts.

The plush bed, cozy seating area, and spa-style bathroom made it easy to relax, while the historic touches reminded me of the inn’s rich past.

We enjoyed the complimentary afternoon social hour with wine and hors d’oeuvres. It was such a nice way to meet other travelers and chat with the innkeepers.

Breakfast each morning was another highlight, featuring fresh, locally inspired dishes served in a sunny dining room.

For me, The Cuthbert House Inn is more than just a place to stay. It’s an experience that captures the charm and beauty of Beaufort itself! Its easily one of my favorite boutique inns in South Carolina, and a truly underrated treasure I can’t wait to revisit.

Conclusion

Romantic moments aren’t always grand (if they are, it's just a plus!) They’re often found in the quiet: a harbor breeze at sunset, a shared dessert on a candlelit porch, the soft hush of a historic room holding you both like a secret.

South Carolina makes room for those moments. And whether you’re planning a proposal, celebrating an anniversary, or getting away without kids (or even with kids) to be close again, these destinations offer more than comfort. They offer the kind of space where love grows deeper.
