The Winterville Mounds and Museum is a primary archaeological site north of Greenville in Washington County that features 12 prehistoric Native American mounds and two large cleared and filled plazas. Named for a nearby community, the 42-acre site was once an ancient ceremonial center built by a Native American civilization that existed between A.D. 1000 to 1450. Developed into what looks like a cave, the Winterville Mounds Museum explores the history of the region, the people who inhabited it, and the lavish, sacrificial ceremonies that took place in and around the mounds. The museum also looks at how the flat-topped pyramid-shaped mounds were built, the largest of which reaches 55 feet in height and has a span of almost 400 meters.
