Planning a weekend getaway and not sure where to go? No problem! The Midwest may be vast, but there are so many cool trips you can take for a quick 48 hour reset. This is exactly why I decided to share my favorite things in the Midwest so that you can use my guide as an inspiration to plan your own road trip. From romantic getaways to family adventures, here are my favorite Midwest escapes from our recent for week road trip that I hope you’ll enjoy too.

My Favorite Places to Visit in Upper Midwest / Lake Superior & Northwoods

The Upper Midwest holds a special kind of magic, and one of my favorites for a family weekend getaways. Why? From the rugged shores of Lake Superior to the quiet serenity of the Northwoods, this region offers us a place to slow down, go on a digital detox, and reconnect with nature for a few days.

Grand Ely Lodge
Grand Ely Lodge

Ely, MN - Grand Ely Lodge

I thought this was one of the best weekend getaways from Minneapolis, Minnesota. It instantly became one of my favorite Midwest places once I saw the stunning views of Shagawa Lake stretching out just beyond the lodge.

Ely, MN is perfection for outdoor lovers with heaps of choice. You can go hiking, biking, birding, fishing and camping during the warmer season. In the winter, there's no need to stay indoors either since there's snowshoeing, skiing and dog sledding. These activities are centered around the Superior National Forest and Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

For a place to stay, you should check out Grand Ely Lodge. Our room for two days had everything we needed, from comfortable bedding to a balcony that opened up to lake views, the best way to wake up each morning.

I thought the lodge’s pool and hot tub were a relaxing spot after a day outside.

What I loved best:

In the evening, we sat on the deck, watching the sunset reflect off the lake, my personal highlight.

A downside? Some activities weren't available due to seasonality.

Siskiwit Bay Lodge
Siskiwit Bay Lodge

Cornucopia, WI - Siskiwit Bay Lodge

Not many people have heard of Cornucopia, WI but it's one of our favorite places to visit in the Midwest. Why? Now, first things first, I felt like we had discovered one of the most peaceful and spectacular spots in northern Wisconsin. In addition, staying at Siskiwit Bay Lodge made all the difference for me personally because of its scenic location on the South Shore of Lake Superior.

We absolutely loved the handcrafted log details, admired big stone fireplaces, and had lake views from nearly every angle. Plus, our room for three care-free days came with a whirlpool tub and a private balcony overlooking the water. We spent mornings enjoying a homemade breakfast while watching the sun rise over the lake. It feel like the best romantic Midwest retreat we could have asked for.

I thought the location was perfect—close enough to explore Bayfield, the Apostle Islands, and nearby hiking trails, but tucked away enough that we always felt like we had our own private escape.

What I loved best:

One of my favorite memories was sitting out by the fire pit under a blanket of stars, listening to the gentle waves of Lake Superior while we talked late into the night.

In addition, I super appreciated the cozy common area with books, games, and a chance to connect with other travelers.

Richville, MN - Northern Lights Resort

Richville, MN has just 77 full time residents so this is as off-the-beaten path you can get in the Midwest. This is why it's one of my favorite places to visit on a last minute family getaway. There's heaps of lakeside beauty, a cozy cabin, and that signature "Up North" peace.

I love that in addition to lakeside cabins, you can choose from seasonal and affordable RV sites at the Northern Lights Resort to suit any travel style (and budget!). I instantly thought our journey was worth it!

We drove about 3 hours north from Minneapolis towards Voyageurs National Park this month, where the Northern Lights Resort was a true cabin-in-the-woods stay... quiet, pine-scented, and under a sky full of stars.

Chris, our son and I stayed in a lakeside cabin for a 3-day long weekend. We instantly fell in love with the lake views from our cabin. The interior was comfortable, with air-conditioning, and a fully equipped kitchen.

I especially appreciated that every cabin reservation came with a dock slip and access to family-friendly amenities. You get access to paddle boards, kayaks, a water trampoline, game room, sandy beach, and even a bait barn and snack store.

There’s also a history here. The resort’s roots stretch back to 1946 when it began as a rustic fishing spot.

In addition, I think these Ohio getaways are some of the best in the Midwest.

Two Rivers, Wisconsin

Two Rivers, Wisconsin

Now, first things first, Two Rivers is right on the shores of Lake Michigan so you can count on amazing vacation photos! Secondly, this is one of the most unspoiled stretches of Midwestern lakeshore I’ve ever visited. I honestly think it’s one of the absolute best coastal spots in Wisconsin for a road trip.

Two Rivers has just over 11,000 year-round residents but is close enough to the bigger Manitowoc (just 15 minutes by car) that you get a variety of things to see and do.

First head to Neshotah Beach perfect for swimming and sunbathing. I loved how peaceful it felt.

In town, we wandered through the historic downtown, browsing small shops and stopping for coffee and snacks. If you are curious, legend goes that the ice cream sundae was invented in 1881 at Ed Berners' Ice Cream Parlor in Two Rivers, when a customer requested chocolate syrup on his ice cream!

Rogers Street Fishing Village is another cool stop in town, where maritime history comes alive through exhibits, old fishing shanties, and even a lighthouse. It was a fascinating glimpse into the town’s deep connection with Lake Michigan.

What I loved best:

I think August is the best time to visit Two Rivers because you can catch Rogers Street Days with live music, games for kids and heaps of food.

The Wisconsin Dells

The Wisconsin Dells

This is one of those places we keep returning to because there are heaps of unique things to do here. The area is famous for its waterparks, but there’s so much more to discover once you step outside the slides and pools. I love the towering sandstone cliffs, and peaceful river views. Honestly, I like it equally in the summer as in the winter but I have to warn you to dress warmly.

Just a few hours from both Milwaukee and from Chicago, The Wisconsin Dells is a perfect day trip destination in the Midwest. Since there is so much to take in, we decided to join a guided tour with a local guide on our first visit which was a great idea.

Beyond the slides, I recommend checking out Devil’s Lake State Park. You'll find heaps of trails that open up to panoramic views that were nothing short of spectacular.

Another underrated gem is exploring the downtown area, where cool shops, interesting attractions, and the historic Wilcox Theater add so much character to the city. I think it’s one of the most exciting spots to walk around, and catching a show at the Wilcox is a unique and memorable experience that feels like stepping into local history.

Ironwood, Michigan

Ironwood, Michigan

This is one of my favorite places to visit in Michigan because it offers a bit of everything. You'll see quiet forests, charming small-town streets, and some of the most beautiful fall colors in the Midwest.

We started in downtown Ironwood, where historic red-brick buildings had a nostalgic feel. The giant Hiawatha statue was one of the most unusual roadside attractions I’ve ever seen!

From there, head out to the trails. Copper Peak was the absolute best highlight of the trip. Taking the chairlift to the top gave us breathtaking views over forests and Lake Superior.

What I loved best:

An afternoon at the Ironwood Theatre, a beautifully restored gem that still hosts concerts and performances, my personal highlight!

Mount Zion Park in Ironwood
Brainerd Pines & Lake Reflections

Brainerd, Minnesota

Ready for a history-rich lakeside escape? Check out Brainerd, a real standout and one of my favorite places to visit in the Midwest! I felt like I was stepping into the heart of lake country, about two hours from the Twin Cities.

We started our trip on the water, since Brainerd is surrounded by some of the most beautiful lakes in the state. I recommend a summer visit if you are going for the first time. You can rent a boat and spend the afternoon fishing and swimming.

In town, local diners serve hearty breakfasts, and unique boutiques make for fun browsing. Also be sure to check out family-friendly attractions like the Northland Arboretum and the classic Paul Bunyan Land theme park. You can find an affordable Airbnb for a longer stay.

My Favorite Places to Visit in the Plains & Western Midwest

These places may be quieter and less traveled, but I think that’s exactly where their charm lies. Here are our favorite stops and I hope you enjoy them too on your weekend getaway or longer road trip.

Spearfish, South Dakota

Spearfish, South Dakota

Planning to explore South Dakota's Black Hills? Check out Spearfish, one of my favorite places in the Midwest for a nature escapes. Here you'll find waterfalls, hiking trails, and heaps of small-town charm. I spent mornings walking along Spearfish Creek, watching trout flash through the water, and afternoons winding down at a local café with a warm tea.

The scenic drives were stunning—especially through Spearfish Canyon, where every curve brought a new view. Whether you're hiking through golden fall leaves or catching snowflakes in winter, this town has a quiet magic that stays with you long after you’ve left.

Fargo, ND

Fargo, ND

The "Gateway to the West" charmed me with its friendly Midwest downtown, arts culture with unique prairie heritage. Over two days we soaked up Fargo’s highlights: exploring the eclectic exhibits at the Plains Art Museum, catching a film at the classic Fargo Theatre, sampling craft brews, and wandering through vintage shops in the Warehouse District. I have to warn you, though, that parking can be a challenge on weekends and near Fargo Theatre!

My favorite spot for lunch was Herd & Horns. We had great burgers and tacos at this family-friendly sports bar just off the campus of North Dakota State University.

Need a place to stay? 3-star Hotel Donaldson has local artwork and rooftop views.

What I loved best:

Starting my morning at Youngblood Coffee Roasters was my personal highlight.

Lincoln, Nebraska

Lincoln, Nebraska

This is one of the most quietly beautiful regions I’ve spent time in, and, for me, it's one of the absolute best places in the Midwest to reconnect with nature while staying in a city.

Just an hour from Omaha, Nebraska, Lincoln is easy to reach yet it feels like its own world. You'll find a mix of college-town energy and cultural attractions.

I recommend starting in the historic Haymarket District, where old brick warehouses have been transformed into cool restaurants, coffee shops, and boutiques.

The Nebraska State Capitol was next on our list, and I have to admit, it’s one of the most unique buildings I’ve ever visited. The art deco design, mosaics, and murals are well worth your time, and the observation deck offered spectacular views over the city and surrounding plains.

On the University of Nebraska campus, the Sheldon Museum of Art really stood out with its mix of modern and classic pieces. It felt like an unexpected gem tucked right into the city.

Check prices at Graduate Lincoln.

What I loved best:

My walk through the Sunken Gardens was my personal highlight while staying in the "Star City". The flowers, fountains, and quiet paths gave us a joyful break from the bustle of downtown. It was a moment of calm that made the trip feel complete.

My Favorite Places to Visit in the Upper Midwest – Iowa

I loved exploring these towns because they reminded me that some of the most meaningful travel experiences come from places that feel genuine, unhurried, and full of heart.

Cedar Falls, Iowa

Cedar Falls, Iowa

About an hour and a half from Des Moines, this town makes for an easy Midwest weekend trip that still feels refreshing and new, a real standout!

We started in downtown Cedar Falls, where historic brick buildings now hold cafés, boutiques, and restaurants. I loved strolling down Main Street, discovering unique shops, and pausing for a coffee and snacks.

The real highlight, though, was the access to nature. Cedar Falls is right next to an incredible trail system, and we rented bikes to explore stretches of the Cedar Valley Trails in the summer. It was joyful to ride along the river, passing through wooded areas and open fields, with the scenery constantly shifting.

We also walked through the University of Northern Iowa campus, which brought a lively energy to the city.

Later, we spent a quiet afternoon at Big Woods Lake Recreation Area. The calm water, picnic spots, and easy hiking trails made it the perfect way to unwind.

What I loved best:

Catching a performance at the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.

Pella, Iowa

Pella, Iowa

This place felt like I had stepped into a small slice of Europe right in the Midwest. Just about 45 minutes southeast of Des Moines, this Dutch-inspired town instantly won me over.

You should stop by the town square first, where the Vermeer Windmill rises above red brick streets and tulip beds (see my colorful tulip photos). I loved exploring the windmill museum and learning how it still grinds grain.

Walking around downtown, we found hidden bakeries serving fresh Dutch letters and stroopwafels that quickly became my favorite treats of our road trip.

To relax outdoors, head to Lake Red Rock , just a short drive away.

What I loved best:

Visiting Scholte House, the former home of the city’s founder. The historic rooms and gardens transported me back in time, and I couldn’t help but appreciate how much care the community puts into preserving its history.

Ames, Iowa

Ames, Iowa

This is one of those Midwest towns that instantly puts me at ease and it quickly became one of my favorite places to visit in Iowa. I love how we could spend the morning hiking through peaceful prairies, taste unique flavors for lunch, and enjoy the afternoon exploring local shops, and the evening listening to live music.

Just about half an hour north of Des Moines, Ames is close enough for a quick weekend escape or even a day trip without having to do a lot of driving.

I recommend starting at Iowa State University, which truly sets the tone for the city. I loved walking through the leafy campus, stopping by the Memorial Union, and admiring the famous campanile.

One of my favorite stops in the afternoon was Reiman Gardens, a spectacular 17-acre botanical garden right next to Jack Trice Stadium.

In the evening, Downtown Ames offered us plenty to see.

What I loved best:

The Butterfly Wing at Reiman Gardens was my personal highlight. It felt like stepping into a dream, with colorful wings fluttering around us as we explored exotic flowers.

My Favorite Places to Visit Around the Great Lakes - Illinois

No list of best midwest weekend getaways could be complete without mentioning Chicago, the heart of my favorite Great Lakes experiences in Illinois.

Chicago, Illinois

Chicago, Illinois

I think this one of the absolute best urban destinations in the Midwest if you love nature and city life side by side like we do. Just arriving downtown and seeing the skyline rise over Lake Michigan gave me that instant weekend getaway thrill.

We kicked things off at Dreambox Gallery in Wicker Park, a hidden gem that combines art, creativity, and community in such a unique way.

Later, we headed into the Loop and made our way to Monk’s Pub, which quickly became one of my favorite stops with its cozy, old-world vibe, and dark wood walls.

Of course, you can't possibly skip Chicago’s classic attractions: Millennium Park, and enjoying the lakefront trail.

Need a place to stay? There are lots of options, from hotels to rentals. Check prices at Palmer House Hilton

What I loved best:

For me, Chicago, is one of the best places to visit in Illinois and one of the best Midwest weekend getaways because it has so many great attractions, activities and restaurants!

Taking in the spectacular view from the Skydeck was my favorite highlight!

Best Day Trips Around Central Midwest - Indiana

And, finally...

Indianapolis, Indiana

Indianapolis, Indiana

This is one of my favorite cities to visit in the Midwest because it truly has a little bit of everything.

We flew from Austin to "Circle City" (2 hour 15 minute nonstop flight). Once we landed, getting into a rental car and driving gave us the most freedom to explore (although if you are just visiting Indianapolis for a quick weekend getaway, public transportation is great in the city and I think that you don't need a car). We stayed at Ironworks Hotel Indy (from $234/night) for two days which won the prestigious AAA Four Diamond award and provided us with a very comfortable stay.

In downtown Indianapolis our first stop was the Canal Walk which I learned dates back to the 1800s! In addition, I thought that the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields ($23 Adult admission) is a must see hidden gem I was glad I made time for. If you have kids don't miss The Children's Museum of Indianapolis ($30 Adult, from $25 Youth Admission) which has been ranked #1 in the country and my son loves. Indianapolis Zoo (from $26.75 Adult, $23.75 Child) was another highlight for our family.

For dinner, Spoke & Steele inside the beautiful Le Meridien Indianapolis was a standout - we had a romantic dinner dining on fresh, seasonal offerings.

What I loved best:

For me, Indianapolis is one of the best places to visit in the Midwest.

My personal highlight was the Canal Walk at sunset because it really made me appreciate the city’s unique character.

In addition, over two days, we sampled great food at restaurants downtown, including great breakfast at Cafe Patachou, Bazbeaux Pizza for a casual family lunch, Harry & Izzy's and St. Elmo Steak House for steaks, The Capital Grille for delicious seafood.
