St. Francis Trail is a charming 7.9-mile trail meandering along the floodplains of the St. Johns and St. Francis Dead Rivers, offering moderately-strenuous hiking experiences for area history buffs. The trail traverses along lands once occupied by the ghost town of St. Francis, which was originally founded as Old Town in 1887 and was home to a health resort, hotel, post office, general store, and newspaper headquarters during its heyday. By the turn of the 20th century, the implementation of railroads in the region led to the town's demise, leaving only remains today. Trail hikers can traverse through six Florida ecosystems and observe a wide variety of bird species, including red-tailed hawks and pileated woodpeckers.
