A. E. Backus Gallery and Museum is the preeminent international showcase of the works of Florida painter A.E. "Bean" Backus, the first native Florida artist to build a career painting the state's gorgeous natural landscapes. Throughout the 20th century, Backus became known as "Florida's painter laureate," also serving as a prominent civil rights advocate for African-American artists as part of the Florida Highwaymen collective. Today, the museum serves as a retrospective of Backus' seven-decade painting career, hosting the only permanent exhibition in the state honoring the Highwaymen's lives and works. Rotating special exhibits also showcase the works of prominent national and international artists, with a focus on artists with humanitarian activism involvement.
