Rattlesnake Canyon Park is a popular spot for hiking and horseback riding in the Santa Barbara region, located adjacent to Skofield Park near the beautiful Santa Ynez mountain range. The park derives its name from its signature serpentine canyon, which was cultivated by the region's indigenous Chumash people as a water source from nearby Mission Creek and used by Spanish colonizers in the 19th century for the operation of the Santa Barbara Mission. During the 1920s, the canyon was owned by wealthy New York socialite Ray Skofield, whose son Hobart began the practice of planting pine trees within the canyon. Visitors can explore the lovely 2.6-mile Rattlesnake Canyon Trail, which climbs northward to an elevation of 2,475 feet above sea level and showcases native bird and wildflower species.
