Review:
Doheny State Beach is a charming day-use beachfront near San Juan Bay, accessible via the intersection of Park Lantern and Dana Point Harbor Drive. The beach, which is owned and operated by the State of California, offers two separate North and South Beach areas, separated by the mouth of San Juan Creek.
Swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, and beginner surfing are popular water activities due to low rolling waves from San Juan Bay, with tide pools exposed at low tides for families to explore.
A visitor center offers interpretive exhibits on the area's geology and marine life, with an aquarium, indoor tide pools, and a bookstore available for families to explore. Along the beach's southern end, a large campground provides opportunities for overnight stay. Visitors should note that the beach's water quality fluctuates and should check on water quality before swimming.
