Portmarnock Beach, also known as the Velvet Strand, is a beautiful five-mile sandy beach stretching between Malahide Beach and Baldoyle near Dublin, known as the site of Charles Kingsford Smith's flight launch for his famed 1930 transatlantic flight. The pristine beach has been awarded both Blue Flag and Green Coast Award designations for its beautiful smooth sands and excellent water conditions. Sand dunes flank the beachfront, home to a wide variety of native Irish flora and fauna, with beautiful views of Howth Harbour and the Dublin Mountains offered from its shoreline. Visitors can swim in the beach's waters or use the adjoining trail to Malahide Beach for jogging, cycling, or rollerblading throughout the warmer months.
