If you're looking for small-town charm near D.C. with trails, events, and historic flair, I think you should head to Herndon, Virginia! I love how it's tucked into Northern Virginia’s tech corridor, yet still feels welcoming and walkable. When you visit, you’ll find a quaint downtown filled with character, plus plenty of green space to relax or explore.
I’ve found Herndon to be a great spot whether you’re here for business or just exploring for the weekend. You can enjoy the peaceful vibe while staying close to the excitement of the D.C. metro area. I always recommend it when you want convenience without giving up charm.
When I Think You Should Visit
If you ask me, the best time to visit Herndon is in the spring or fall (April–June and September–October). I’ve found the weather to be just right—mild enough for walking around town, and there’s always something going on, from local festivals to farmers markets. Summer has its perks too, especially if you enjoy lively outdoor events. I’ve also been in winter, and while it’s cooler, it has a quiet charm that makes holiday lights and local cafés even more inviting.
How I Usually Get to Herndon (And How You Can Too)
- By Air: I usually fly into Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)—it’s just about a 10-minute drive from Herndon, which makes arrivals super easy.
- By Car: If I’m already in the area, I take VA-267 or VA-28. It’s only about 25 miles west of D.C., so you can easily make it part of a longer trip.
- By Metro: I’ve used the Silver Line’s Herndon Station to get into D.C., and it’s a really convenient option if you want to avoid driving into the city.
Where I’ve Stayed (And Where I Think You’ll Feel Comfortable)
- Hyatt Regency Dulles – I’ve stayed here when I needed to be near the airport. It’s modern, comfortable, and the shuttle makes getting around a breeze.
- Embassy Suites by Hilton Dulles Airport – This is one of my go-tos when I want a little more space. You’ll love the free breakfast and the evening reception—I always do.
- SpringHill Suites Herndon Reston – I like this spot for its location. It’s close to downtown and right near the W&OD Trail, which I use for morning walks when I’m in town.
