Review:

The 16th century Galle Fort was built by the Portuguese during their occupation of the island of Sri Lanka. It’s an incredible piece of history that already merits a place on this list, but in a historic warehouse near the fort is the National Maritime Museum Galle, a place where visitors can learn about the history, biology, and anthropology of the region and coastal area. Unfortunately, during the tsunami of 2004, much of the Museum’s archaeological research was destroyed in the flooding, but the museum survived and only recently was re-opened to the public. Visitors to the museum can see examples of typical watercraft used in the region throughout history as well as specimens and displays of flora and fauna found in the seas surrounding Sri Lanka.
