Nonnberg Abbey is a Benedictine monastery dating back to the 8th century and the oldest continuously existing nunnery in Germania. Founded in 712 by Saint Rupert of Salzburg, the monastery is set on the side of the Mönchsberg high above the rooftops of Salzburg and became famous as one of the sites in the film, The Sound of Music. The abbey is home to some magnificent Romanesque frescos and can be explored on guided docent-led tours.
