On the banks of the Danube River, Zemun, formerly an independent town that has been around since Roman times which has gone through several hands including the Ottomans and Austrians, before becoming part of Belgrade in 1934, is a charming neighborhood that is a great addition to any itinerary. Today, the area is well-preserved, and the architecture provides a peek of 18th- and 19th-century living. Travelers who want to enjoy panoramic views of the city head to Gardoš Hill and the Millennium Tower, where they can spot Kalemegdan and the famous fortress. Culture lovers often take in the opera and other performing arts at Madleniaum, a modern national theater that opened in1999. No visit to this part of New Belgrade is complete without taking a stroll by the pretty riverside.
