Named after a fortress of years gone by, Avala is a picturesque mountain surrounded by pine forest 9 miles from the Belgrade city center. Steeped in legend and lore, the area is now a popular place for picnics and to enjoy panoramic views. Along with the natural scenery, there are a few points of interest including the tallest building in the Balkans, Avala Tower, which opened in 2010, and the Monument of the Unknown Hero by sculptor Ivan Meštrovic, which opened in 1938 as a symbol of unity of the former Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Nearby, there are historic churches and landmarks such as the former birth house of Duke Stepa Stepanovic, where military artifacts from World War I are on display. The company Serbia Car Tour offers excursions to Avala.
