The Museum of Western Art in Kerrville, Texas, is dedicated to the paintings and sculptures of artists of the American West whose works follow the tradition of Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. Besides the rotating collection of artworks, the museum has an art library and teaching space. The museum opened on April 23, 1983 under the name the Cowboy Artists of America Museum, In 2003 the museum changed its name first to the National Center for American Western Art and then to the Museum of Western Art. The building that houses the museum was designed by O'Neil Ford, a renowned architect who pioneered the Southwestern style of architecture. The exterior of the museum looks like a fortressed hacienda. The exhibit of life-sized bronzes is located outside. The museum collection is distributed throughout the 14,000 square feet of indoor space. The art focuses on cowboys, Native Americans, early settlers, women in the West, ranchers, law-enforcement officers, and mountain men.
